Sixth Sunday Ordinary Time 2017
So many times, when we examine our conscience, we think of the ten commandments and just like the Pharisees make a list of what we have not fulfilled in “the law”. It is almost as if today’s Gospel was never preached!
Jesus takes the commandments out of the realm of simply obeying external norms and places them in the questionings of the human heart. What is in my heart when I place myself before the Lord? Do I have a healthy relationship with God, myself and others?
How do I treat my brothers and sisters in the Lord? Do I try to always forgive and where appropriate and possible, reconcile with others? Do I see my body and the body of others as an extension of who I am spiritually...that body and soul are united? Have I ended a relationship for no good reason, leaving another person feeling betrayed and disillusioned? Am I always wearing a mask because I am afraid of the truth of who I am or of what others might think of me? Am I at peace with myself and do I live in harmony with others? These and so many more questions are for the heart to answer.
Maybe Valentine’s day this week might be a good day for us to remember this Gospel and to ask ourselves if love is the norm of our lives.
