A "honeymoon"

0

Our turning of our will and our lives over to God begins well enough—with a desire to be one with God. Through the intimate graces by which Jesus attracts us, we discover the Father and the Father's very personal love. We discover Jesus and his human heart. We willingly give ourselves over to God by detachment from things, single-heartedness, and doing the Father's will. This is true of all true disciples of the Lord. We are detached because Jesus said he had nowhere to lay his head; we do God's will because he lived to do the will of the Father who sent him; we are single-hearted as he was in his love for his Father and his brothers and sisters.

As is true in any relationship, in our relationship with God there is a “honeymoon.” We need our early enthusiasm to enable us to step out in a new direction. Otherwise, even to begin the journey would be too hard for us.

Prayer:

I recall, Lord, the gentleness with which you drew me to yourself. My memory of your kindness sustains me, even now, for you do not change though I do. Strengthen me to remain faithful to my early commitment to you.
