A new song

0

Psalm 149 invites us to “sing to the Lord a new song.” The reasons we sing at all are: gratitude for the graces we have received; hope for the fulfillment of all our desires; and joy because, even now, we are in union with the Lord. We can ask as St. Augustine did, What makes the song new? God planned the salvation of the world from the very beginning. Every generation of believers before ours has had reason to sing. Yet we, each of us, have had to rediscover God's plan for us. We make this discovery as God draws us to himself. Our experience is something very new when it first occurs: the enthusiasm of first conversion.

For those who are born into the faith, as it were, first conversion may have been our first deep awareness of the splendor of God's love for us. For those who came later into the faith, it is the discovery that there is a divine meaning to life, a meaning which is new. All of us need to keep the song new in our hearts. On God's part it can never grow stale, for we can never discover all there is in God.

Prayer:

May I never grow “used to” your gifts, Lord Jesus. May I sing the new song of your love all the days of my life.
