Confession is good for the soul. It is especially effective when we confess to God as well as another human being. In any disclosure of self we gain in honesty and humility. Any falseness in the way we see ourselves will show up when we open our consciences to another person. Moreover confession allows us to share our load with another. At that moment there is an end of isolation and loneliness. Finally, we find guidance in forming a plan of life that is new and more wholesome than the one we have lived.
Even people without religious belief have discovered the value of opening up to another person. It is ironic that people whose tradition includes confession with an official religious forgiveness have often abandoned this gift of the Lord. We need one another in many ways especially when we have cut ourselves off from both God and other human beings.
Lord, you have given me brothers and sisters very much like myself to be a support to me and your representatives when I am in need of forgiveness and support. I thank you for them.
