Cultivating a familiar relationship with Jesus

0

An excellent way to pray is to cultivate a familiar relationship with Jesus, telling him exactly what we think and feel and would like to have happen, if he approves of course! We can share our difficulties and joys with him. If we do this we may sometimes wonder what Jesus thinks of us. Is he displeased with the imperfections which even we can see in ourselves? Do the traces of selfishness or resentment or whatever turn him away?

Friends take one another as they are, though not always pleased with one another's quirks. Friendship is far deeper than a few rough edges. Friendship with Jesus is like this. He doesn't approve of selfishness and resentment but he doesn't stop being a friend every time we slip back into old ways. Only a radical betrayal or denial can drive him away and even then he will try to reestablish his Friendship with us. He is the first of all reconcilers. Jesus, above all, forgives seventy times seven times (Mt 18).

Prayer:

You have called me to be your friend, Lord. You accept me as I am. I pray that I may have the honesty to come to you as I am trusting in your love for me.
