Daily renewal of our hearts

0

The role of a prophet is to bring people back to the divine covenant. Again and again, God told his people that he would allow the past to be past, offering a new beginning. Isaiah said: “Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool. If you are willing, and obey, you shall eat the good things of the land...” (Is 1).

Isaiah is calling for an obedience from the heart and of the heart—a turning from self to love of God and neighbor. We may ask, “How often shall we turn?” Each day is a new beginning. Each day needs a new turning because we so often tend toward selfishness. It is only the daily renewal of our hearts by God which enables us to persevere in following the lead of Jesus. We have reason for neither discouragement nor complacency. The grace of God is faithful and necessary. In the end, he will achieve his saving purpose in us.

Prayer:

In my moments of self-doubt, Lord, remind me that you are my strength. In moments of complacency remind me that without you I can do nothing. Enable me to remain faithful and give me peace of heart.
