Decision for peace

0

Jesus said: “I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me” (Jn 17). St. Paul described the ideal: “Because you are God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another; forgive whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Over all these virtues put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect. Christ's peace must reign in your hearts, since as members of the one body you have been called to that peace” (Col 3).

The ideals of Jesus are not easy to put into practice in a real Christian community. Even in a perfect community differences of temperament are part of our very make-up. In a community that is real, aggravations arising from our imperfections are inevitable. Christ's peace in our community and in ourselves needs a decision for peace. It won't just happen.

Prayer:

Make me a peace-maker, Lord, first by my own living in your peace and then by my way of living with my brothers and sisters. Only you can reshape the “Old Adam” or the “Old Eve” in me and in us.
