When people flocked to Jesus they came looking for very specific benefits, the healing of either their body or mind (Mk 6). The Gospels don't show that most of them were looking for spiritual betterment. They were driven merely by immediate earthly problems! The Gospels show that some did not even thank him. The reason for their ingratitude was that they did not see their deeper, spiritual needs.
Others drew near to Jesus and came to believe on a deeper level. They came to believe in a Person who loved them and could transform their lives as well as relieve their immediate distress. They made a decision to live by Jesus' teachings.
At the end of his Gospel, Mark shows that we are called to imitate the way in which Jesus himself acted, expelling demons and laying on of hands as signs—to get people's attention so that we can then address their deeper needs.
Give me the compassion, Lord, to make myself present to others' illnesses and pain so that some at least may come to know you as their savior and friend.
