The “acceptable hour” for turning to Jesus is always now. Grace is always given in the present moment. We ought to ask: What is Jesus up to at this moment? Are we flexible, or tied to the past or future? Everybody has heard the expression “A day at a time,” but not everybody knows how to apply it.
Married couples may think that when they have a marriage certificate they will live happily ever after without making a special daily effort to bring that about. Religious may believe that on the day of their vows they have succeeded in giving themselves completely to the Lord and can coast toward heaven. New priests may regard ordination as the seal of their faithfulness to the mission of Jesus needing no really difficult maintenance. In fact, every day is a new beginning in the Lord, whatever our calling. This thought is both challenging and hopeful. Every day we have a new opportunity.
This day, Lord, I begin anew in your love. Whatever has gone before, you have given me another opportunity. You never tire of leading me to a fresh understanding of your love.
