Expectations

0

His own people did not accept Jesus because he was so familiar. Moreover he did not fit their expectation of a marvelous Messiah. When we expect God and God's prophets to be marvelous, God can be kept at arm's length. We think we can bargain with such a God and even be able to fool him by our religious practices. He will also be a God who will protect our selfish interests. That is what Jesus was up against.

God by dwelling among us with a human nature has put us on the spot. Jesus is a free gift of love and invites a free response of love. He isn't given to bargaining and he certainly doesn't cultivate our selfishness. He also puts us on the spot because he lived as the supremely Holy One in exactly the same circumstances that we do. He was even tempted in all things as we are (Heb 4). Because Jesus reaches out to us in a human way we can respond to him with our hearts. This is far better than the narrow religion of Jesus' neighbors.

Prayer:

You have set me free, Lord, so that I can relate to you in freedom. You approach me not in marvels but rather with your love and your call for my love in return.
