Full of surprises

Like Mary Magdalene we sometimes insist on seeking Jesus in the Empty Tomb. By the time we arrive he is elsewhere and other than where we expect him to be. When we do find him we do not recognize him at first.

The peace of the Risen Christ penetrates our world and yet is beyond the world. From the time of the Finding in the Temple to the time of Mary Magdalene's search in the garden Jesus was full of surprises. Following Jesus' lead is a perpetual exercise in flexibility. The disciples on the road to Emmaus lacked this flexibility. They were disappointed with Jesus because he had not delivered Israel from the Romans. They had an agenda that he had failed to fulfill. Jesus wanted to free them, not from the Romans but rather from spiritual chains. They asked for external freedom; he offered them inner freedom so that they could receive and give God's love.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I believe there are no chains so confining as those I place on myself. Self-will and my selfish desires have forged them. Only faith in you and a change of heart can remove them. I beg you to set me free to live in your love.
