God cares about the poor

0

Jesus is the perfect revelation of God's justice and mercy. St. Matthew wrote: “Now John...sent a message by his disciples to ask him, 'Are you He who is to come or do we look for another?' In reply, Jesus said to them: 'Go back and report to John what you hear and see: the blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, the deaf hear, dead men are raised to life, and the poor have the good news preached to them' “ (Mt 11).

The good news is that God cares about the poor. There is an intimate connection between peace and justice, especially justice to the poor. At the very least those who are unjust can have no inner peace whatever else they have. If the injustice is flagrant a society groans in pain until that injustice is removed. Isaiah shouted to his people. Jesus wept over the holy city. He said: “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Mt 5). Like Jesus did, we mourn over the agony of the world.

Prayer:

When I am rich, Lord, I cannot hear your word. When I am poor my heart is open. When I am poor in spirit I am able to have a heart for the poor. Increase my understanding of how you see the world.
