Jesus grieved over Jerusalem: “Coming within sight of the city, he wept over it and said: 'If only you had known the path to peace this day; but you have completely lost it from view! Days will come upon you when your enemies encircle you with a rampart, hem you in and press you hard from every side. They will wipe you out, you and your children within your walls, and leave not a stone on a stone within you, because you failed to recognize the time of your visitation' “ (Lk 19). Did God send the conquering Romans to sack the Holy City? Couldn't he have saved Jerusalem anyway?
Divine wisdom is far greater than human wisdom in looking at the problem of evil. God is freedom-oriented. He will not remove human freedom, an image of God's own freedom. The wicked will be allowed to be wicked and both they and the just will suffer. What God does is guarantee to those who are faithful that he will raise them above all evils.
This day, I hear your invitation to rise above all the turmoil in this world and in my heart, Lord. I believe that as you were raised from the dead you will raise me up to a new life.
