Harmful attachments

0

In becoming free of our harmful attachments we feel distress. Body and mind rebel when we experience an unsatisfied hunger for comfort. Still we know that there is no lasting bliss on earth least of all for a disciple of Jesus who said: “...the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head” (Mt 8).

We need a combination of faith and courage to follow Jesus. We need faith that he is able and willing to set us free of self and bring us to our destination which is a bond of eternal love in this world and the next. We need courage to endure the increasing separation from self-chosen consolations which indulge us and enslave us.

Our most powerful motive is that Jesus is calling us to himself. He is calling us to walk in freedom. Jesus chose to have “nowhere to lay his head” on our behalf. Our joy is to choose his way, out of love for him and others.

Prayer:

In heaven and on earth you, Lord Jesus, are my happiness and my strength. With you I can overcome any obstacle. With you I will not be afraid to live in freedom and walk in your way of love.
