Honesty of heart

0

Jesus told the Samaritan woman, “The Father desires worship in spirit and truth” (Jn 4). The spirit of God is the selfless Giver of everything. He gave the earth to human beings to live in with the dignity of the children of God. We who have received his spirit cooperate with God in making it possible for all humankind to receive his gift.

The truth is to be found in honesty of heart. Self-seeking finds many excuses to evade the plan of God. In the Gospel the Samaritan woman tried to divert Jesus with a religious discussion about where people should worship. That way she could avoid the truth that she always did exactly as she pleased without asking what God might have in mind. People who have wealth and power are more likely than most to find excuses to do what they please, whatever the consequence may be for the poor and the marginalized in our world. We are called to be just and merciful and to proclaim his call to the world.

Prayer:

Let me be neither timid nor rash, Lord, when I speak out in your name in a world that hardly knows you. Teach me how to imitate your dialogue with the Samaritan woman in reaching the hearts of others.
