When we are sick or in pain it is simply enough to be in God's presence. That may be all that is possible. He knows our pain, our fear. He knows us through and through. Though we are mortal he can keep us faithful no matter what! Eventually we come to know this by experience and not only by being told of it. God sustains us in pain by promising us his love. He is with us and we are his in this world and the next.
Before his passion, Jesus offered us peace: “Do not let your hearts be troubled...” (Jn 14). Yet in the Garden and on the Cross he himself was greatly troubled. Evidently, the peace that Jesus offers us is deeper than any suffering. That is how we can suffer and still be at peace. The explanation is in our faith and hope. Down deep inside we trust the Lord and realize that in the end he will bring us through every passing trial.
Give me confidence, Lord. When I have little strength and my spirit is sad, let me accompany you into the Garden and remain with you in your sadness while you contemplate your own passion which you bore for my sake.
