Love must be free

0

The great paradox of human nature is that we have the liberty to choose either freedom or the slavery of evil. Evil in turn destroys us and others. From the beginning, at the very time God created human nature, he chose to reach out to heal the wounds of moral evil that appeared almost immediately. His Providence guides the fallen back to wisdom and true freedom, which is the freedom to love God and one another in God.

We may ask: Could not God have created a universe in which no moral evil could appear? No doubt! Why then has God proceeded in the way he has? All through Scripture the Father and Jesus constantly invite a response of love. Invitation implies the ability to refuse. Love must be free. What human lover would value a love that was not free? What God desires of us is a free response to God's gift of love.

Prayer:

Deliver us from evil, Lord. Deliver me from the evil that enslaves me and makes me less worthy to be called a child of God. You have offered me wisdom to know you and freedom to love you. Bring me to the fullness of what I can be.
