More blessed to give than to receive

0

Sometimes the best way to deal with our own faults is to put the focus elsewhere though not merely as an escape from them. Moral faults come from self-centeredness one way or another. Focusing on our moral faults can sometimes aggravate them. When we turn our attention outward to distract ourselves we are not better off. If however we turn from ourselves with true concern for others we can make progress because we are clearing away the selfishness which is at the bottom of it all.

This is a secret that many have discovered by experience. For years they may have struggled against their failings and made little progress. Then while reaching out to the needs of others they have found that they have been liberated, and have hardly known how that happened. The pattern of addicts who reach out to other addicts is well known. They maintain their own recovery by that effort. However the same road is open to anyone who seeks spiritual progress.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you told your disciples that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Lead me by your grace to forget myself in the effort to help others.
