“Let your face shine on your servant. Save me in your love...” (Ps 31). The notion of God's light shining on his people is an ancient one. In his light we can travel through a desert, overcome enemies and arrive in the Promised Land. For a Christian Jesus is the light of God. We see his face in prayer when we are aware that he is near to us. We see him reflected in our own hearts as we become like him. We see him in our neighbor if we look at our neighbor as Jesus does, with compassion and love.
The light of Christ enables us to see life in a way which is hard to communicate to those who walk by a different light. Jesus himself called people's attention to his actions as a reason to believe in him. So too people will see our actions before they are able to hear our words. Letting ourselves be frustrated is essentially useless. In God's time those who are open to his word will believe.
Your light shines all the time, Lord, but my eyes can see it only because of your grace. Make me a witness to your light by the way I live my life and respond to the needs of others.
