Nineteenth Sunday 2017
When there are storms in my life, what should I do? All of the disciples except Peter decided to stay in the boat. Who did what was right?
Both responses are appropriate at different moments of life.
Sometimes I know deep inside that I need a serious change in my life. The chaos is too much. The storm might be a bad work situation or the neighborhood I live in or a group I belong to and I know that I just need to get out. Other times, I might need to stay and work at a relationship or enter the struggle to change my environment or society itself from the inside. Either way, I need to trust in the Lord who walks over the waves. He wants me to know that he is with me. Even if I doubt at times and begin to sink, he will not abandon me.
The way to know him is to take time with him. Jesus went alone to a mountain top to pray. Elijah fled to a cave. Sometimes I will find him in the midst of the storm and sometimes in a quiet, gentle breeze. Being in his presence gives me the direction I will need for the important decisions in my life and the strength I will need to be faithful.
