Success

0

Often we do not know how this or that will turn out. We hope that what we are doing is useful for others but we do not know whether or not we will succeed. The worth of the effort cannot be measured by the result. Experience shows that we cannot plan success; faith shows that God does not measure what we do by external success. By that measure, an observer on Calvary would have been able to make no sense out of Jesus' crucifixion.

Jesus' success arose from the way he made his Father's love a part of our world. He did this by immersing himself freely and completely in everything that is human. It is the spiritual power of Jesus’ love which has transformed the world, not any immediate result of his words and actions. The Church lay in ruins for a time. But in the end his love prevailed because Jesus always planned only to fulfill his Father's will, neither more nor less.

Prayer:

Lord, give me a large view of the power of your love in my life and my work. Guard me from adopting a worldly measure of success. When I become attached to results remind me of how you succeeded in changing the world.
