The Beatitudes: Sunday Reflection

0

Fourth Sunday Ordinary Time 2017

Am I Happy?

“Blessed”. Just what does that word mean? In Scripture, it means “happy”. Jesus wants us to be happy.

However, some of the other words in this same Gospel, like: “mourning...persecuted...insult you...utter every kind of evil against you falsely” don’t seem to fit well with the word “happy”.

But, before we reject the beatitudes as being illogical or too spiritual or theoretical, maybe it would be good for each of us to ask “am I happy?” If not, then maybe we need to question our attitudes, values and goals in life.

Maybe the upside-down world that Jesus proclaims has something to offer. Maybe spending life gazing upward and working so hard to have more, or be more important, or be more “in change” of things, isn’t the way to happiness. Maybe happiness is to be found within each of us and in our solidarity with one another.

The Beatitudes, a challenge to our attitudes!
