When we look on the heart of Christ as our model we can see our own calling by the Father, the fidelity of Christ and our own call to fidelity. We can see his obedience in proclaiming his Father's will and the power of God visible in that obedience. Jesus' faithful fulfillment of his mission showed more than the power of the One who sent him. He was filled with the Father's love. The heart of Jesus is a heart of flesh capable of compassion. His compassion enables him to feel with us; his power enables him to empower us.
People will mark us as true Christians according to our compassion. Indeed this is so true that of all the faults that a disciple might have, a lack of compassion is the most glaring. Jesus said: “Blessed are the merciful; they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5). We have but to open our own hearts to the Source and to the need. The very essence of our calling as disciples is mercy and compassion, empowered by the grace of God.
Make me a sign of your concern, Lord. Help me by your power to meet the needs of others, especially their spiritual needs. Give me a heart of flesh.
