The most powerful movements in human history, the ones that lead to lasting change, are not brought about by force of arms or grandiose ideas. Conquerors of the world make a great noise at the time. Political systems such as communism can dominate whole nations for many years. Yet in the end it is something else in the human spirit that prevails. That “something else” is the Mustard Seed of the Gospel. It begins with the divine image in human beings. That is where our dignity, freedom and aspirations come from. Jesus has added something still more powerful—the grace to be united with God.
The reason why the voice of God will not be stilled in this world is because he speaks to something deep in the human heart. God is not a worldly conqueror. He is creative and compassionate; he has a heart and speaks to our hearts. The invitation of Jesus is more powerful than all human force or human ideas.
The only conquest that matters, Lord, is your conquest of my heart by your love. Draw me to yourself this day and guide me into ways that are loving so that others may see what really matters for them.
