The Poor in Spirit

0

The Poor in Spirit realize that God's mercy is not deserved. St. Paul wrote: “At the appointed time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for us godless men....It is precisely in this that God proves his love for us, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5). True disciples know that the gift of salvation flows entirely from God's mercy and that left to ourselves we are powerless. We are not a sad people because in ourselves we are powerless. We have confidence that God will save us and that in this life he will guide us.

This confidence is also critical when we have been crushed by grief or any other evil. We come to believe in a healer of our spirits who can guide us through our suffering. The one thing God asks of us is that we be willing to be guided by him in every feature of our lives. Suffering can lead either to discouragement or a deeper relationship with God.

Prayer:

You have shown me by my life experience, Lord, that I am not self-sufficient. Not only can I not save myself; I cannot even deliver myself from a multitude of earthly evils. I give myself over to you because I trust you.
