We may have fears

0

Jesus said: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Live on in my love” (Jn 15). Earlier, he had said: “Anyone who loves me will be true to my word, and my Father will love him; we will come to him and make our dwelling place with him” (Jn 14).

We may have fears which are the result of our natural makeup; they are an illness and need to be treated as such. It is part of wisdom to be able to distinguish what comes from the weaknesses of our nature and what comes from God. We may also have fears which arise from the circumstances of life. For this latter kind of fear there is no more powerful remedy than a sense of the presence of the Lord in our lives and in our hearts.

At times, Jesus may allow us to feel abandoned. He is near but we cannot sense his nearness. In that darkness, our faith matures. He is even then closer to us than we are to ourselves.

Prayer:

Early in the morning you come to me, my Lord, to teach me how to trust in you. Whatever else I feel, I do trust in you. Abide with me this morning and this day. Abide with me in the hour of my distress.
