Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will guide us to all truth (Jn 16). The ultimate truth for us is to see God face to face. Now in this world our spiritual life depends upon what we believe about God. “In him we live and move and have our being,” as Paul says (Acts 17). Yet we need to discover God gradually, guided by the Holy Spirit.
As human beings, we have to think in human terms. We use words like “goodness” and “love” and “freedom” and “eternal life” to describe the life and attributes of God. We are thinking of examples from our human experience. The “I Am” does not exist in the same way that we exist. We were given existence and left to ourselves we would cease to exist. God simply is. We learn to be good. God is goodness itself. Our love is bound to have an element of self-interest. God simply loves, because to love is God's nature.
I praise you, my God, because you are supremely good and beautiful. All that is good and beautiful in me can only be a created reflection of you. Purify my understanding of you and unite me with yourself.
