Yet God forgave them

0

The history of the people of ancient Israel was that they had been given an original grace and covenant that lifted them into a new relationship with God. To create that covenant God overcame great obstacles for them. He then led them through the desert to a place of peace. This people grew tired of having God lead them. They gave themselves over to self-will and idolatry. Yet God forgave them. Hosea says:

When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms; I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks; yet, though I stooped to feed my child, they did not know that I was their healer. My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred. I will not give vent to my blazing anger, I will not destroy Ephraim again; for I am God and not man, the Holy One present among you; I will not let the flames consume you. (Hos 11)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you see all human afflictions as a kind of bondage and yourself as a liberator. When I fall back into slavery reach out and free me once more.
